Trojans Fall in Final Midweek Contest at UC Irvine, 7-4

IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold on on the road at UC Irvine, falling 7-4 to the Anteaters.

The Trojans fall to 23-28-1 overall, while UC Irvine improves to 35-16.

USC scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Getting three straight extra-base hits with two outs in the first, and then a two-run single from Matthew Acosta in the second. Acosta started the two-out rally in the first and was driven in on a double off the wall by Clay Owens. Owens scored on a triple by Trevor Halsema.

UC Irvine would score four runs to tie the game in the fifth, scoring once on a wild pitch, once on a double and then getting a two run triple. A two-run homer in the sixth by the Anteaters' Griffin Mazur gave the home team the lead.

Isaac Esqueda kept UC Irvine scoreless through the first four innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five batters. He took a no-decision in the contest.
