May 12, 2019 | Track & Field, Features
16 individuals advance to finals; Katnik 6th in men's shot put
The USC women's 4x100m relay team set a school record and Matthew Katnik placed sixth in the men's shot put to lead the Trojans during the first day of the 2019 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships held at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. today (May 11). In all, USC women earned 12 berths to finals tomorrow and the men's team five. The meet had a roughly three and a half hour weather delay due to rain and lightning, stopping around 7:15 p.m. and restarting at 10:45 p.m.

- The running portion of the meet began with USC's women's 4x100m relay team of Mecca McGlaston, Angie Annelus, Lanae-Tava Thomas and TeeTee Terry advancing to tomorrow's final by posting an amazing time of 42.44. That time is a USC school record, a Drachman Stadium record, the current world leader and second all-time among Pac-12 quartets.
- The men's 4x100m relay did not have to run a prelim as only nine teams entered, so they were all advanced to tomorrow's final.
- The day began with the men's hammer throw in the morning and USC was shutout in the scoring. Jason Kim had a best throw of 163-4 (49.78m) in his third attempt to finish 14th overall. Nathan Bultman had fouls in all three attempts and did not advance to the final to defend his 2018 Pac-12 hammer throw title. No male has won consecutive Pac-12 hammer throw titles since USC's Remy Conatser did it in 2013-14.
- The USC men's team scored its first three points of the meet when Matthew Katnik placed sixth in the men's shot put with his best mark of 62-1.75 (18.94m), which came in his final attempt.
- In field finals today, Ayden Owens had a best mark of 164-7 (50.17m) in the men's javelin throw to finish 14th. He also competed in the men's long jump, but did not land a legal jump in his three attempts.
- The only running final for the Trojans was the last race of the night at roughly 11:15 p.m. when Mitch Libby competed in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Libby had a time of 9:46.96 to place 12th in the event.
- The remainder of the day's action featured qualifying races for tomorrow's finals.
- First, Kamryn Weber advanced to the women's 1500m final tomorrow by running a PR of 4:24.38 to finish seventh in her heat and 12th overall to grab the final advancing spot. Chloe Berry had a time of 4:30.25 to place ninth in her heat and 16th overall.
- All three USC women's 100m hurdles runners advanced to tomorrow's final, posting the three-fastest qualifying times. Chanel Brissett won the third heat and was first overall with a time of 12.88 (+0.4), Anna Cockrell won the second heat with a season-best time of 13.00 (+0.2) and advanced second and Mecca McGlaston had a season-best time of 13.06 (+0.2) to take second in the second heat to finish third overall. Dior Hall was held out as a precaution, so she will be ready to roll at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Sacramento, Calif.
- All three men's hurdlers also advanced to the finals tomorrow. Marquis Morris won the second heat with the fastest time of the day and a season best of 13.71 (-0.6). Ayden Owens was in the same heat and finished third with a season-best time of 13.84 (-0.6) and advanced third overall to the final. Omotade Ojora won the first heat with a time of 13.85 which qualified fifth overall to the final.
- Zach Shinnick ran in the men's 400m dash, but pulled up around 150m into the race with a leg issue and did not finish. The good news is that he reported feeling much better after the race.
- The USC women's 400m runners all automatically advanced to the final tomorrow by winning their heats. Kyra Constantine was first and won the first heat with a PR of 51.77. Her time was the fastest qualifier and moved her to eighth on USC's all-time list and it is the fourth-fastest time this season on the NCAA descending order list entering this weekend. Kaelin Roberts made her 400m debut this season by winning the second heat with a time of 52.16, second among the qualifiers. Bailey Lear won the third heat with a PR of 52.48 which was fifth among the qualifiers.
- The men's 100m heats began, but the lightning and rain came before USC's runners had a chance to compete. The meet then picked up again with the rest of the men's 100m dash again at 10:45 p.m., after roughly a three and a half hour weather delay.
- Daniel Robinson had a PR of 10.39 (+1.2) to finish second in his 100m heat and advanced to the final tomorrow with the sixth-fastest time. Brendon Stewart took second in his heat with a time of 10.44 (+0.6) to advance eighth to the final. Alexander Barnum had a time of 10.49 (+1.2) to finish third in his heat and 13th overall.
- All four of the USC women's 100m runners advanced to tomorrow's final. Thomas had a PR of 11.25 (+1.9) and was the fastest-qualifier to the final. Annelus had a time of 11.37 (+2.6w) to qualify third to the final, Terry a time of 11.46 (+2.1w) to qualify fifth to the final and Brissett a time of 11.69 (+1.9) to qualify eighth to the final. Thomas, Terry and Annelus won their heats.
