No. 6 USC Men's Volleyball Beats No. 5 UCLA In 5 Sets On Troy's Senior Night

Seniors Ryan Moss had 16 kills, Jack Wyett added 13 kills and Gianluca Grasso had 12 kills to lead the No. 6-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 19-25, 25-15, 14-25, 25-20, 15-11 win over No. 5 UCLA on the Trojans' Senior Night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match to conclude regular season play on Saturday (April 6) in USC's Galen Center.
USC, which remained undefeated at home in 2019 (11-0), improved to 16-9 overall and finished in third place in the MPSF with a 7-5 mark. UCLA dropped to 18-8 overall and 8-4 in the MPSF for second place.
USC now enters MPSF Tournament play, where the third-seeded Trojans will host a quarterfinal match against sixth seed Grand Canyon next Saturday (April 13) in USC's North Gym (there is a scheduling conflict in the Galen Center). Second seed UCLA will host seventh seed Concordia in another MPSF quarterfinal contest next Saturday.
After the UCLA match, USC's 5 seniors—Moss, Wyett, Grasso, Matt Douglas and Tyler Resnick—were saluted on Senior Night.
USC hit .357 in the match to UCLA's .342. The Trojans had 8.0 blocks and 8 aces, while UCLA had 3.0 blocks and 7 aces. Both teams had 36 digs.
Moss hit .344, Wyett had 5 digs and 3 blocks and Grasso had 7 digs. Douglas added a match-high 12 digs, while Resnick had 3 blocks, Chris Hall served 3 aces and had 6 digs, Sam Lewis had 4 blocks and Jameson McKibbin came off the bench to serve 2 aces.
For UCLA, Daenan Gyimah had 21 kills and 7 digs, Micah Ma'a added 18 kills (hitting .395) 7 digs, 3 blocks and 3 aces, Grant Maleski had 3 aces and Adam Parks had 6 digs.
UCLA jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set and USC could never make up the gap as the Bruins served 3 aces and hit .684 (no hitting error on 19 attempts) despite Troy's .526 mark. With UCLA leading 9-8 in the second set, USC ran off 7 unanswered points to move ahead 15-8 and cruised in while getting 4.0 blocks. UCLA burst to a 4-0 start in the third set and steadily pulled away while serving 4 aces. An early 3-point run gave USC a 7-5 lead that UCLA could not overcome. The fifth set remained tight until USC ran off 3 late points to forge a 13-10 lead and held off the Bruins while hitting .500 in the set.
Before the match, USC head coach Jeff Nygaard was honored by the World Olympians Association as part of the group's initiative awarding the letters OLY after an honoree's name in recognition for an Olympian's athletic achievements, as well as their status in the global sports society, their commitment to furthering the Olympic ideals and their dedication to hard work and athletic endeavor. Nygaard appeared in 3 Olympics for the USA (1996 and 2000 indoor and 2004 beach) and is one of 4 volleyballers to represent the USA both indoor and on the beach.
