USC Men Pick Up No. 8 Seed For 2019 NCAA Action
April 29, 2019 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojans will host the NCAA First and Second Rounds this weekend.
The USC men's tennis team has another top-10 seed in its pocket for another NCAA run. The Trojans left no doubt in securing their 13th consecutive NCAA appearance, taking an automatic berth as the 2019 Pac-12 Champion. At 20-7 overall, No. 8 seeded USC already has its third straight 20-win season in the books, but the Trojans are looking for more as they aim to better last year's NCAA Quarterfinal run and take a shot at claiming the program's 22nd national championship.
This year, USC will serve as host for the NCAA First and Second Rounds at Marks Stadium on May 3 and 4. This year, the NCAA Round of 16 will also be held at various campus sites on May 11, with the final eight teams heading to Orlando, Fla., for the remainder of NCAA team competition (May 16-19) before NCAA Individual action (May 20-25) gets rolling at the same venue.
In his 17th season at the helm, USC head coach Peter Smith has his Trojans peaking for the postseason. USC's victorious run in Ojai gathered in the Trojans' fourth Pac-12 Tournament title and sends USC into NCAA action with a seven-match win streak and a 20-7 record. Last year, USC was the No. 10 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Trojans last won it all back in 2014 and have since made two Quarterfinal and two Round of 16 runs in the tourney.
For this 2019 NCAA run, USC has six nationally-ranked Trojans, led by #10 Brandon Holt and #20 Daniel Cukierman. Senior Laurens Verboven is locked in at #27, followed by #61 Tanner Smith, #77 Logan Smith and #88 Bradley Frye. USC also boasts four ITA All-Americans in Holt, Verboven, Jack Jaede and Riley Smith. Holt and Riley Smith also grip a #11 national ranking in doubles.Â
This weekend, USC hosts three teams in NCAA First and Second Round competition at Marks Stadium for the 13th consecutive season. Starting their paths in Los Angeles toward a ticket to Orlando are No. 8 seeded host USC, Northern Arizona, Minnesota and San Diego.
