USC Offense Explodes Late for Series Win at Cal Poly

USC left seven runners on through the first five innings, but came up with eight hits and 10 runs in the final three frames to move to 19-22-1 on the year. Cal Poly, which had come in sweeping its last three series, falls to 20-20.
After the teams traded runs in the sixth, USC trailed 5-1 heading into the seventh. CJ Stubbs got the rally going with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Blake Sabol who walked to lead off the inning and then took second on a wild pitch. Clay Owens then came up with two runners on and tripled off the wall in right to score both with two outs in the inning.
The Trojan would tie the game in the eighth after Chris Clarke came in to toss a scoreless bottom of the seventh. After a one-out single by Tyler Pritchard, Sabol tripled to right-center to even things up at 5-5, and then would later score on a wild pitch to give the Trojans the lead. A five-run ninth inning, highlighted by a three-run triple from Stubbs, broke the game open for USC.
Clarke tossed two more scoreless innings to end the game, stranding two runners in each of the final two frames. Carson Lambert preceded Clarke with a scoreless sixth and Chandler Champlain gave up just one run in 2.1 relief innings before that. John Beller took a no-decision in the start. Cal Poly used eight different pitchers in the contest.
TOP PERFORMERS
- CJ Stubbs had two hits, including a triple, and four RBI on the day, while scoring two runs as well.
- Blake Sabol went 2-for-3 with a triple and three walks, while driving in two runs and scoring three more.
- Clay Owens was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.
- Chris Clarke threw 3.0 scoreless relief innings to pick up the win. He struck out five batters and walked just one while giving up two hits.
