Trojans Shut Down Mustangs For Series-Opening 4-1 Win
April 26, 2019 | Baseball, Features
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The USC baseball team scored three runs in the eighth and shut down the Cal Poly bats to take the series opener on the road on Friday night.
Connor Lunn gave USC another solid start before turning it over to Carson Lambert and Chris Clarke who helped the Trojans give up only one run on the night and move the team to 18-21-1 overall. Cal Poly falls to 19-19.
The Trojans had an early 1-0 lead thanks to a Matthew Acosta RBI single in the third, but Cal Poly came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Mustangs loaded the bases in the fifth and scored on a groundout, but Lunn got a groundout to end the inning and strand two runners after that.
After tying the game, Cal Poly turned to their relief ace Michael Clark, who came into the game having given up nine earned runs in 47.1 innings pitched this season. He tossed three scoreless innings before the Trojans got to him in the eighth. CJ Stubbs worked a leadoff walk and Jamal O'Guinn singled up the middle, setting up Acosta for another RBI as he singled to left. O'Guinn would score on a wild pitch and then John Thomas laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score a third run.
Lambert, who had taken over to start the seventh, struck out two batters to strand a Cal Poly runner in the eighth, and then Clarke struck out the side to slam the door in the ninth.
