Trojans One-Hit Utah in 6-0 Win
April 11, 2019 | Baseball, Features
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The USC baseball team was dominant on the mound and at the plate, holding Utah to one hit while scoring six of their own on a season-high 16 hits in a 6-0 series-opening win on Thursday night.
Â
Connor Lunn tossed six full innings and the Trojan bats kept the pressure on all night, moving USC's record to 14-18 overall and 6-7 in Pac-12 play. The Utes fall to 8-19 overall and 1-12 in conference action.
Â
After Lunn had already exited the game, the Trojans were still in a 3-0 dogfight even with the hit total piling up, but USC broke the game open in the top of the eighth with three runs, including a two-run triple from Jamal O'Guinn. Blake Sabol singled home a run earlier in the inning to get things going.
Â
Lunn struck out a career-high nine batters on the day, allowing just two runners past first base all game and none past second. Carson Lambert would toss a scoreless seventh, working around a two-out hit-by-pitch and inducing three groundouts in his lone inning of work. Austin Manning then entered and got a double-play to toss a quick eighth and then stranded a runner on first in the ninth. The trio are the first Trojan pitchers to combine for a one-hitter since 2013 against Arizona State.
Â
USC got on the board in third inning, scoring on an O'Guinn single and a Ben Ramirez sacrifice fly. Ramirez brought home another run in the seventh on a groundout.
