Trojans Split Doubleheader With Grand Canyon

LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team split its doubleheader with Grand Canyon at home on Sunday afternoon, dropping the opening game 7-3, before coming back with a 7-1 victory in the late game.
USC moves to 4-6 with the split, while Grand Canyon goes to 5-6 on the season.
After giving up seven runs in the first three innings to start the day, the USC pitching settled in and gave up just one run over the last 15 innings of the doubleheader.
GAME 1: GCU 7, USC 3
The Trojans would chip away at the deficit in game one, scoring on an Emilio Rosas single in the fourth and then putting up two runs in the fifth. Matthew Acosta doubled in a run and Jamal O'Guinn singled home the second in the fifth, but that was it for the scoring in the opener.
Carson Lambert tossed innings in relief for the Trojans, giving up one run on five hits. Brian Gursky threw 2.0 hitless innings to finish the opener. Zach Barnes got the win in relief for the Lopes.
GAME 2: USC 7, GCU 1
USC jumped on the board first in the late game, getting a sacrifice fly from O'Guinn in the third inning. Grand Canyon would even things up thanks to a solo-home run from Cuba Bess in the fourth.
The Trojans would get an RBI single from Chase Bushor to take back the lead in the sixth, and then loaded the bases and added a run on a walk by Blake Sabol. USC tacked on four runs in the eighth, getting a two-run single in the frame from Acosta.
Isaac Esqueda made his first career start in the second game, tossing 4.0 innings in which he gave up three hits and one run. Connor Lunn got the win in relief after 3.0 scoreless innings on the mound. Quentin Longrie and Chris Clarke each threw scoreless frames to end the game.

USC will face Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at home for another non-conference matchup. The Trojans then host the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic next weekend, with No. 19 Oklahoma State (Friday) and No. 17 Michigan (Saturday) coming to Dedeaux Field, and then a matchup with No. 4 UCLA at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.
