Jack Wyett Named AVCA National Player Of The Week
March 26, 2019 | Men's Volleyball, Features
USC senior outside hitter Jack Wyett was named the Sports Import/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week for his stellar performance in USC's stunning upset over No. 1 Long Beach State last Saturday (March 23).
Wyett also earned the MPSF Offensive Player of the Week honor yesterday (March 25).
Wyett had 13 kills while hitting .579 (only 2 hitting errors on 19 swings) and added 4 digs, an ace and a block as No. 11 USC upset top-ranked, undefeated, defending NCAA champion Long Beach State.
This is the 17th time that a Trojan has earned AVCA Player of the Week honors, with the last being fellow teammate Gianluca Grasso after USC beat Pepperdine in the 2018 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament quarterfinals.
USC snapped Long Beach State's 23-match winning streak (dating to 2018). Coming into the match, the 49ers had lost only 4 sets all season. It was the first time LBSU was swept since its 2017 season-ender against BYU in the NCAA semifinals. The 17 points LBSU scored in the third set was its fewest in a 25-point set since scoring 15 in a loss to Penn State in 2015.
It was USC's first win over a No. 1-ranked team since defeating defending NCAA champion UC Irvine on the road early in the 2013 season. It was the Trojans' first sweep over LBSU since 2015.
