The Women of Troy extended their streak to five matches and improved to 15-2 overall
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (15-2) claimed victories over tournament host Arizona State (10-5) and No. 5 Pepperdine (13-6) at the PERA Club in the ASU Invitational on Friday, March 22. The Women of Troy extended their winning streak to five consecutive matches.
The Trojans improved to 11-0 all-time against the Sun Devils by grabbing a 4-1 victory in their first dual. USC scored the first point in the dual on a win at court four where juniors Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn took down Kate Baldwin and Samantha Plaster, 21-11, 21-18. At the fifth position, freshman Mollie Ebertin and sophomore Maja Kaiser claimed a 22-20, 21-12 win over Emily Anderson and Lauren Weintraub to give the Women of Troy a 2-0 lead in the dual.
USC's top duo of senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina delivered the clinching blow with their 21-19, 21-18 win over Katelyn Carballo and Ashley Wenz at the top court. The Trojans went to 4-0 in the dual with a win at court three where sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto recorded a 21-11, 21-18 win over Cierra Flood and Kara Woodward.
ASU scored its only point from the second position in a three-set win. There, Katie Cross and Ellyson Lundburg toppled the Trojans' pair of senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater, 12-21, 21-19, 15-12. In a non-counting match, Natalie Braun and Maddy Salazar defeated freshmen Laurel Kujan and Hannah Martin, 13-21, 22-20, 15-9.
Without rest between the two duals, USC went straight to work against the Waves. Each of the matches at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions went to three sets and ended in a one-all tie for the teams.
The first point was scored by USC when Ebertin and Kaiser came back from losing their first set to take a 22-24, 21-19, 15-10 win over Katie Gavin and Simone Priebe at court five. In the opposite situation, Maddie Dilfer and Nikki Lyons dropped their first set, but came back against Dennis and Dorn to take a three-set win with deuce-points in each of the first two frames, 20-22, 25-23, 15-13.
The Trojans went in front, 2-1, on a win at court three. Hallgren and Poletto also needed three sets to beat Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone, but their 21-19, 20-22, 15-10 win was the duo's 17th in a row and keeps the Trojan pair undefeated this season. Each of the top two courts closed in straight sets. Pepperdine evened the dual score with a win at the No. 2 position. There, Gigi Hernandez and Deahna Kraft defeated Cannon and Slater, 22-20, 21-15, to even the dual at two-all.
With the dual result in the balance, Bustamante and Graudina went to the next gear to complete a 22-20, 21-17 win over Brook Bauer and Heidi Dyer at the top court. The win propelled the Trojans to their fifth straight dual victory and pulled USC even in the all-time series with the Waves at 12-all. For Bustamante, it was her 104th career victory, which moved her ahead of Jo Kremer (103 wins; 2015-18) and into sixth all-time at USC.
In a non-counting exhibition match, Pepperdine's Melanie Paul and Jenna Tunnell defeated freshman Karina Myszkowski and sophomore Josannah Vazquez, 21-9, 21-14.
USC concludes play at the ASU Invitational with a 10 a.m. PT dual against No. 6 Hawai'i (10-5) at the PERA Club on Saturday, March 23.
