March 23, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy won their sixth straight on a 4-1 victory over the Wahine
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (16-2) recorded a 4-1 win over No. 6 Hawai'i (12-6) at the PERA Club to complete their trio of duals at the ASU Invitational on Saturday, March 23. The Women of Troy extended their winning streak to six consecutive duals and improved to 13-3 in 16 all-time meetings with UH.
The Trojans scored the first two points of the dual with wins at the bottom of the lineup. There, freshman Mollie Ebertin and sophomore Maja Kaiser knocked off Paige Dreeuws and Sophia Russo, 21-18, 21-16, to get things started. The 2-0 lead went up when juniors Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn completed their 21-18, 21-19 win at the No. 4 position over Hi'ilawe Huddleston and Kylin Loker.
In a non-scoring match, the Wahine's Regan Hurkett and Ashley Stevens defeated USC freshmen Laurel Kujan and Karina Myszkowski, 21-14, 21-17.
There wasn't much suspense for the Trojans, who notched the winning point at the top court when senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina logged their 21-16, 21-12 win over Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee. Hawai'i claimed its only point at the No. 3 position in a tight battle as Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon took down sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto, 25-23, 28-26, to end the Trojan duo's 17-match winning streak and hand them the season's first loss.
At the No. 2 pairing, senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater went deuce points in the first two sets and split 22-20 decisions with a first-set loss and a second-set win against Ari Homayun and Julia Scoles. The third frame was a more lopsided affair as Cannon and Slater won, 15-8, going away.
The Women of Troy are back in action next Saturday (March 30) at Pepperdine. The Trojans and the Waves will meet at Zuma Beach for a 10 a.m. PT dual in USC's only match of the week.
