The Trojans’ junior midfielder is the first player in Pac-12 history to earn both its offensive and defensive player of the week awards
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse junior midfielder Kerrigan Miller (Bayport, N.Y.) was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Week for the week of March 4-10, the Conference announced on Monday, March 11.
Miller—who was chosen last season as the March 19 Offensive Player of the Week—becomes the first player in conference history to receive both the offensive and defensive weekly awards in her career. The honor is the USC program's sixth all-time Pac-12 weekly certificate. Colorado senior attacker Miranda Stinson was chosen as this week's Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week.
In two games, Miller collected nine ground balls, caused eight turnovers, and secured six draw controls to go with three goals on the offensive side of the field. Miller was the Trojans' defensive catalyst and USC's transitional spark in victories over Arizona State and No. 24-ranked Virginia Tech. Against the Sun Devils, Miller caused three turnovers, picked up three ground balls, and won three draw controls. She also scored a pair of goals against ASU. In her game against the Hokies, Miller racked up six ground balls to tie a career mark and set a new season high with five caused turnovers. She also scored a goal and had three more draw controls.
During the two games, Miller moved ahead of USC All-American midfielder Amanda Johansen into fourth for career ground balls at USC (111) and is already fourth on the Trojans' career list for draw controls (115) and third in career caused turnovers (85).
The Pac-12 is in its second season of women's lacrosse. Trojans have now earned conference weekly honors six times. All-league goalie Gussie Johns was chosen twice for defensive player of the week in 2018; and All-American defender Lydia Sutton was named Defensive Player of the Week once. Senior attacker Emily Concialdi was chosen for the offensive award on Feb. 25 this season.
The 22nd-ranked Women of Troy (6-1, 1-0 Pac-12) hit the road for two league games this week. First, the Trojans meet No. 23 Colorado (3-3, 2-0) for a Friday-afternoon bout in Boulder, Colo., at 3 p.m. MT (2 p.m. PT). The Women of Troy then head up to Oregon (2-5, 0-2) to take on the Ducks on Sunday (March 17) in Eugene, Ore.
