Lopes Down Trojans 4-2 to Start Series
March 01, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team fell 4-2 to Grand Canyon in the opener of a three-game series between the teams.
The Lopes used a four-run sixth inning to pick up the win and move to 4-5 on the season. USC falls to 3-5 on the year.
Both teams starters were dealing through five innings, but the Lopes broke things open in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, David Avitia singled in a run and later, with the bases loaded, Quin Cotton brought home three with a double.
USC would get on the board with a two-out rally of their own in the seventh inning, when John Thomas singled with runners on the corners to make it a 4-2 game. That was it for the offense on the day, however, as the Trojans went down in order each of the next two innings to end the game.
Quentin Longrie (1.0 IP) and Chris Clarke (2.0 IP) tossed three scoreless innings to end the game for USC. Kade Mechals outdueled the Trojans' Kyle Hurt to pick up the win, as both starters went 6.0 innings.
