The USC lacrosse junior was chosen as the first-ever Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year in 2018
NEW YORK – USC junior All-American midfielder Kerrigan Miller was named as one of 50 women selected to the official watch list for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation on Thursday, Feb. 28.
The Tewaaraton Foundation selects top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse to highlight early contenders for the 2019 award. Among this year's watch list returnees are 2018 women's Tewaaraton winner Samantha Apuzzo (Boston College) and the 2017 and 2018 men's Tewaaraton finalist Pat Spencer (Loyola). The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
As a sophomore, Miller was named the first-ever Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year and earned IWLCA All-America third-team honors. While she was not part of the initial 2018 watch list, she was later added on March 22. This season, she ranks second on the team with seven goals (2.33 gpg), is also second in draw controls (11), and leads the team with 11 ground balls. Miller is one of three Pac-12 players on the initial 50-woman list. She is joined by Colorado junior goalie Julia Lisella and Colorado senior attacker Miranda Stinson.
Several Trojans have advanced to be named to the list of Tewaaraton Award nominees. Most recently, three-time All-American Michaela Michael received nominee status in 2017. Michael and All-American midfielder Amanda Johansen were the first two Trojans ever to be named to the Tewaaraton Award's watch list at the beginning of 2016. Michael and All-American defender Courtney Tarleton were each named nominees at the end of that 2016 season. Michael, junior defender Lydia Sutton and junior goalie Gussie Johns were each on the 2017 watch list. Johns and Sutton were on the initial 2018 watch list and were later joined by Miller.
Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 21 and April 4. On April 25, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 9 and will be invited to the 19th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 30.
