Trojans Drop 2-1 Pitchers Duel to UC Santa Barbara
February 26, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team dropped a 2-1 pitchers duel to UC Santa Barbara at home on Tuesday night.
The Trojans got a strong start from freshman Chandler Champlain and then four solid relief innings from the bullpen, but couldn't find the offense they needed to make a comeback. The loss drops USC to 3-4 on the season, while UC Santa Barbara move to 6-2.
Champlain gave up a first-inning home run to UCSB's Tommy Jew, but then settled in and retired 14 of the next 16 batters he faced over his five innings of work. Carson Lambert came in next and tossed 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just an unearned run that ended up being the difference in the game.
The Gauchos got a one-out single in the top of the seventh from Trevor Rowan and he would advance on a passed ball, ground out and score on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.
UCSB's Jack Dashwood tossed 6.1 no-hit innings before the Trojans finally got a hit in the seventh. USC would eventually push a run across in the eighth, after Brandon Perez led the inning off with a single and scored on a two-out single by Matthew Acosta. Acosta would be stranded at third to end the inning.
USC then got runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth, but a popout in foul territory and a groundout ended the game.
