Trojans Cruise to 11-0 Win Over Omaha
February 16, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team used an eight-run fourth inning and stellar pitching by John Beller to cruise past Omaha 11-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans got hits from nine different players on the day and RBI from eight different batters en route to moving to 2-0 on the season.
After needing four runs in the final two innings and a walk-off single from Brandon Perez the night before, the Trojans left no doubt about this one early on, scoring eight runs on six hits in the fourth inning.
CJ Stubbs led the inning off with a double and after a single and walk loaded the bases, John Thomas drew another walk and brought home the first run of the game. Matthew Acosta followed with an RBI single through the right side and Chase Bushor doubled home two more a batter later. Brandon Perez later added a two-run single, Jamal O'Guinn a sacrifice fly and Emilio Rosas an RBI single.
The eight runs were more than enough for the Trojan pitching, led by 7.0 scoreless innings from Beller. The sophomore lefty allowed three hits on the day, walked just two and struck out five batters. Carson Lambert would make his collegiate debut in relief and proceeded to toss 2.0 scoreless innings without allowing a hit or walk and striking out three. An Omaha runner made it past first just twice on the day.
USC would tack on three more runs in the seventh, scoring on a fielder's choice, groundout and wild pitch.
