It is USC associate head coach's third straight Olympic head coaching assignment.
USC associate head coach Catherine (Vogt) Kase has been named the open water head coach for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team, USA Swimming announced Tuesday (Nov. 5), the third consecutive open water Olympic nod for her.
Kase, in her 12th year at USC and third as associate head coach, will lead a team of three Americans competing in the open water 10-kilometer race in Tokyo. The open water trio of USC NCAA champion and Olympic medalist Haley Anderson, Ashley Twichell and Jordan Wilimovsky punched their Olympic tickets with top-10 finishes in the 10K at the 2019 FINA Open Water World Championships, where Kase was also the team head coach.
"Catherine's leadership, pride in team culture and legacy of success will be incredibly valuable to our team at the Olympic Games," said USA Swimming Director of Open Water Bryce Elser, also a former Trojan. "I am confident Catherine will do a great job prepping our team for success next summer in Tokyo."
Said Kase: "It is a tremendous honor to represent the United States as the head coach for Open Water. I am so excited to lead such an amazing group of athletes and their coaches. Over the last 15 years, I've been involved in, and passionate about, open water swimming. Hopefully that experience will benefit the team as we navigate the ever-changing elements of open water.
"I am extremely grateful for the many people who have helped and supported me along the way. It is such a privilege to work with great athletes, coaches and USA Swimming in the lead up to and through the Olympic Games. Go USA!"
Kase's other Olympic head coaching appearances came in 2012 for the Tunisian Olympic Team and 2016 for Team USA. In Rio, she coached both Anderson and Wilimovsky to fifth-place finishes in their respective races. In Tokyo, she will be looking to guide Anderson to her second-career Olympic medal, while Wilimovsky and Twichell reach for their first.
Along with her Olympic head coaching roles and leading Team USA's open water swimmers at the 2019 FINA World Championships, Kase has also been Team USA's open water head coach at the 2009, 2013, 2015 FINA World Championships, 2014 and 2016 Pan Pacific Championships and 2007 Pan American Games.
The open-water competition at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 begins August 5 with the women's 10K, followed by the men's 10K on August 6.
