Hocking's Record Four Goals Lead Trojans Past Titans in NCAA Opener

USC will face Texas A&M in the second round, hosting the Aggies on Friday, Nov. 22 at 1:30 p.m. The Trojans improve their record to 15-4-1, while Cal State Fullerton ends its season at 14-3-4.
After a quiet first half, Alea Hyatt and Hocking connected three straight times to open the second half and help USC cruise to victory. Hocking's four total goals match a USC single-game record set back in 1993 by Amy Peterson and set a USC postseason record for goals scored. Her nine points (four goals, one assist) in the game set a USC record, breaking the previous mark of eight. Hyatt's three assists also match a Trojan record, making her the eighth player to do so.
The duo first connected in the 48th minute, when Hyatt sent in a cross from the right side that was tapped by Natalie Jacobs and fell right to Hocking, who slotted it home. It was Hyatt on another cross from the right in the 59th minute that Hocking finished on one touch to make it a 2-0 game. They would make it three goals in the span of 16 minutes, when Hyatt found Hocking at the top of the penalty area, and Hocking dribbled in and slid a shot past the keeper.
Cal State Fullerton would get on the board in the 72nd minute when Atlanta Primus scored on a rebound to make it 3-1. The Trojans would squash any hopes of a late comeback, though, when Savianna Gomez came into the game and scored roughly 30 seconds after checking in, this time getting an assist from Hocking to score in the 80th minute. The Trojans star of the day would put the icing on the cake in the 83rd minute, dribbling deep into the right side of the penalty area and sliding her fourth goal past the Titan keeper.
GOALS
48' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Natalie Jacobs, Alea Hyatt) – Hyatt sent a cross from the right side of the penalty area that was tipped by Jacobs in front of the goal and fell to Hocking, who slid it home with her left foot.
59' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Alea Hyatt) – Hyatt again got into the right side of the penalty area and sent a sharp cross past the face of the goal that was finished by Hocking with one touch near the far post.
64' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Alea Hyatt) – Hocking and Hyatt played a little give-and-go game, with Hocking sliding the ball backwards to Hyatt and Hyatt sending it right back to her near the top of the penalty area. Hocking dribbled into the area and slid a low shot past the diving keeper to her right.
72' – CSF: Atlanta Primus (unassisted) – Primus got out on the break and tried to beat a charging Kaylie Collins, but her first attempt was blocked. Primus was right there to grab the rebound, however, and slot it home.
80' – USC: Savianna Gomez (assisted by Penelope Hocking) – Hocking sent a hard cross into the box that the keeper dove to deflect, but it still carried to Gomez, who tapped it home right in front of the goal.
83' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Samantha Bruder) – Bruder played a long ball forward that was collected by Hocking and played past the defender in the same touch. She then dribbled into the area and slid a shot past the keeper's left side from a tough angle in the right side of the area.
