Both Golden State standouts should be big contributors for USC.
Junior standouts Ethan Chung from Murrieta, Calif., and Shane Ffrench from San Diego, Calif., both ranked among the top 10 players in California, have signed letters of intent with USC, Trojan men's golf head coach Chris Zambri announced Friday (Nov. 14).
Ffrench comes from a USC family, following both his mother and older brother to the University Park campus, and earned 2019 San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team honors. The successful junior has a trio of top 5 finishes in 2019, including a third at the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior, a fourth at the Hunter Mahan Junior Championship and a fifth at the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship. His 2018 featured a trio of top 10s led by a fifth at the Taylor Made adidas Golf Boys Junior All-Star. He joined his brother Colin as 2015 Drive Chip and Putt Championship champions who competed at Augusta.
"Shane bleeds Cardinal and Gold," Zambri said. "He is one of the most talented 2020s out there. He hits the ball squarely just about every time, has plenty of length off the tee and has developed a high level short game to match his ball-striking prowess. I look for Shane to make an immediate impact for our team from the day he walks on to campus."
Chung has two 2019 wins at the Corey Pavin Invitational in June and at the TTC Invitational at Bear Creek G.C. in May to go with four other top 10 finishes, earning him the Toyota Tour Cup 2019 Player of the Year. His 2018 was highlighted by a pair of fifths at the Kyle Stanley Championships and at the AJGA Junior at Big Sky. In 2017, he won the NCGA Junior Tour Fall Series VI and VIII as well as the Justin Rose Junior All-Star Invitational. He posted a pair of top 5s at the IMG Academy Junior World Championship, including a fourth in 2016.
Chung, who was born in Hong Kong before moving to North America as a young boy, is also somewhat of an amateur golf instructor, populating over 50 golf videos on his YouTube channel dating back 10 years.
"Ethan Chung is an awesome pickup for our program," Zambri said. "He is one of the smartest and hardest working recruits we've ever had -- a true deep thinker when it comes to golf. We look forward to having his golf skill and knowledge on our team."
