The 2020 schedule for the USC men's volleyball team has been announced.
In addition to the always-challenging 12-match slate against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents, the Trojans will play 13 non-conference opponents, including at 2-time defending NCAA champion Long Beach State on Feb. 1.
After hosting Canada's Douglas College in an exhibition on Dec. 30, USC begins regular season play by welcoming 2019 NCAA tourney participant Princeton on Jan. 2. Troy plays in a pair of early-season tournaments, first against George Mason (the 2020 NCAA Championship tourney host) and New Jersey Institute of Technology in the George Mason Opening Weekend Tournament in Fairfax, Virg. (Jan. 10-11), and then against Ohio State and host Penn State in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge in State College, Penn. (Jan. 24 and 26). Rounding out its non-league campaign, USC also hosts UC Irvine (Jan. 18), UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 29), Harvard (March 14), St. Francis (March 5) and Lindenwood (March 7) and travels to Cal State Northridge (Jan. 31) and UC San Diego (Feb. 6).
USC's first MPSF match is at home against Concordia on Jan. 16, then the remainder of MPSF play—including against foes UCLA, Stanford, Pepperdine and BYU--starts with a Feb. 8 home match against Grand Canyon (Feb. 8).
All 4 of USC's MPSF matches against UCLA (Feb. 16 and April 4) and Stanford (Feb. 20 and March 28) will be televised live on Pac-12 Network, as will its April 2 home MPSF match versus Pepperdine. USC's remaining home matches will be live streamed on USCTrojans.com.
The MPSF Tournament starts April 18, while the NCAA Championship begins May 1.
Most of USC's home matches will be held in the Galen Center, except for 4 contests scheduled for the North Gym because of scheduling conflicts in the Galen Center (Jan. 16 Concordia, Feb. 8 Grand Canyon, Feb. 29 UC Santa Barbara and March 14 Harvard).
The Trojans will play in 3 pre-season tournaments this fall: Oct. 26 at the Long Beach State Fall Tourney, hosting the USC Fall Tourney on Nov. 2 and then at the UCLA SAC Tourney on Nov. 15 and 16. USC also will host an end-of-season Alumni match on April 11.
USC is coming off a successful 2019 season. The Trojans more than doubled their win total from 2018 by going 18-11 overall (their most wins since 2015) and finishing third in the MPSF at 7-5 (their highest league finish since 2012). Troy was the MPSF Tournament runnerup and, for the first time since 2012, qualified for the NCAAs. USC, playing the nation's toughest schedule, had 7 wins over teams ranked in the AVCA Top 10 at the time and won 11 of its last 15 matches. Its in-season No. 4 AVCA ranking was the program's highest since 2015 and its final No. 5 ranking was its best finish since 2012. Troy was undefeated at home (12-0) for the first time since 2000 and was 5-2 on neutral courts. The team's .320 hitting percentage was its highest since 2011. USC snapped eventual NCAA champ Long Beach State's 23-match winning streak, Troy's first win over a No. 1 team since 2013 (USC was 1 of just 2 teams to beat LBSU in 2019). The Trojans' 3-0 win over BYU was its first sweep over the Cougars since 1991 and the back-to-back wins over UCLA were the first consecutive victories over the Bruins since 2011.
Top returning players for fifth-year head coach Jeff Nygaard are a trio of juniors: opposite hitter-middle blocker Kyle Gear, who led USC in hitting percentage last spring (.421), 2-year starting setter Chris Hall, an All-MPSF honorable mention choice in 2019 who made the MPSF All-Tournament team, and 6-10 middle blocker Sam Lewis, another 2-year starter whose 70 blocks in 2019 was a team high.
