Frye/Smith Advance To Doubles Quarterfinals At ITA All-American
October 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojan duo fought off four match points to move on in Tulsa.
TULSA, OKLA. — USC's sophomore-senior combo pack of Bradley Frye and Riley Smith staged an epic comeback in today's Round of 16 doubles clash out at the St. Francis Health Systems ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The win pushes the #28-ranked and No. 2 seeded Trojan pair into tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Frye and Smith both also had singles slates to handle in Tulsa after solid runs through qualifying play. Ranked #58 in singles, Frye had a tough first-round foe in the main draw, and the USC sophomore fell 6-2, 6-4 to #19 Matej Vocel of Oklahoma State yesterday (Oct. 9). Smith, meanwhile, kept his winning momentum going from qualifying, winning his fourth straight match win a 7-6 (9), 6-2 victory over Ohio State's Cannon Kingsley yesterday. That lined Smith up against #18 Alastair Gray of TCU in today's singles Round of 32, where Smith nabbed the first set before Gray fought back for a 3-6, 6-5, 6-3 decision that wrapped Smith's singles run in Tulsa.
Frye and Smith would regroup for their main draw doubles Round of 16 match, however. The pair had easily dispatched the nation's #16 pair from Cal in the first round yesterday. And today, after dropping the first set to Virginia Tech's Korsgaard/Perez, Frye and Smith dug in for the long haul. They'd eke out the second set to force a deciding 10-point tiebreaker. There, the Trojans would fall behind 9-5 but staved off four match points in a six-point rally to the comeback victory. Frye/Smith's  5-7, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (11-9) decision propels them into the quarterfinals tomorrow (Oct. 11) against Duke's Sculley/Stachowiak.
