USC Men's Volleyball Beats Alberta In 2019 Season-Opening Exhibition

The match opened USC’s 2019 season, the 50th in program history.
Jack Wyett had 16 kills while hitting .560 and Ryan Moss added 12 kills and 4 blocks to lead the USC men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21 home win over Alberta, Canada's No. 3-ranked team, in an exhibition match on Friday (Jan. 4) in USC's Galen Center Pavilion.
The match opened USC's 2019 season, the 50th in program history.
Wyett had 5 digs and Moss hit .417, while Gianluca Grasso added 8 kills and 5 digs and Chris Hall had 6 digs.
For Alberta, Jackson Kennedy had 15 kills while hitting .462, Taryq Sani added 13 kills and 5 digs, Alex McMullin had 12 kills and 6 digs, Jacob Deinum and Max Elgert had 7 digs.
USC hit .323 to Alberta's .221. The Trojans had 8.5 blocks to the Golden Bears' 6.0.
USC broke out to a 9-6 lead in the first set and extended it to 19-11 before Alberta charged back to within 21-18, but the Golden Bears could get no closer as Troy hit .3845 in the set. In the second set, the Trojans built an 8-4 lead and then 15-10, a margin that Alberta couldn't overcome. Alberta tallied 3 consecutive points to break a 14-14 tie in the third set and held off the Trojans while hitting .522. The fourth set stayed tight until USC ran off 3 straight points to open an 18-15 lead
USC now begins regular season competition when it plays in the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic in Hawaii on Jan. 10-12 versus Concordia, New Jersey Institute of Technology and No. 3 Hawaii.
