Trojans Down Under - USC Women's Tennis Australia Trip Blog - Pt. 2
January 17, 2019 | Women's Tennis, Features
Hey Trojan Fans!
This is our fourth day on our Tour of Australia, and now we are at our final stop for the remainder of the trip: Melbourne! Or "Mel-bun" if you want to sound like an Aussie! ;)
Our short but eventful stint in Cairns finished with an unforgettable day at the Great Barrier Reef. While there, we were treated to some incredible experiences including a glass bottom boat ride to some amazing snorkeling. I'll admit, our heavy duty jellyfish-protection gear combined with the way-too-casual comment of "Sure, there are some sharks out there" made us a bit nervous. However, once we were out there, the beautiful coral, the diverse population of fish and even a few run-ins with some giant sea turtles made the snorkeling well worth the risk.
Tennis was difficult to come by in Cairns due to the rainy weather, but we managed to sneak in our first practice of the trip before our flight to Melbourne, and we had another one early this morning. The heat and humidity combined are a brutal mix, but everyone is very excited to be back on the courts hitting again.
Throughout the rest of our day, we were spectators at the Australian Open! Along with watching some of the world's top pros, we also made sure to go support some of our Trojan alumni competing in the tournament including Sabrina Santamaria, Kaitlyn Christian, and Giuliana Olmos. This is the first Grand Slam I've ever attended, and it was quite the experience to be a part of!
I cannot begin to express how excited we are for our chance to play on these hallowed grounds. Less than a week to go!
Fight on!
