USC Men’s Volleyball Beats NJIT In Second Round Of Rainbow Warrior Classic

Ryan Moss had 15 kills while hitting .367 to lead the USC men's volleyball team to a 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-15 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology in the second round of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic on Friday (Jan. 11) in Honolulu, Hi.
USC improved to 2-0 in 2019, its 50th season of play. NJIT fell to 0-4.
USC concludes play in the Rainbow Warrior Classic when it meets host No. 4-ranked Hawaii in the tourney finale on Saturday (Jan. 12) at 7:30 p.m. HT.
Moss added 8 digs and 4 blocks, while teammates Gianluca Grasso and Jack Wyett each had 9 kills, Brandon Browning had 8 kills (hitting .353) and Chris Hall and Cole Paxson each had 9 digs.
USC hit .281 to NJIT's .174 in the match and the Trojans served 11 aces. Troy also had more digs (40 to 33).
Piotr Namiotko led NJIT with 17 kills, while Alvaro Gimeno had 9 kills and 5 blocks, Jens Feldhus had 6 kills and 7 digs, Luca Berger had 7 blocks and Chris Wise had 11 digs.
USC went on a 4-0 run midway through the first set to go up 17-11 and NJIT never threatened. The Trojans held a 7-2 lead in the second set, but NJIT steadily caught up and then scored back-to back points to go up 20-18 before USC moved ahead at 23-21, but the Highlanders scored 5 of the final 6 points to capture the set. The third set was tight the whole way until the Trojans tallied the final 3 points (USC hit .345 in the set and served 4 aces). An early 4-point run in the fourth set gave USC a 10-5 lead that it gradually extended while hitting .455 and adding 4 more aces.
