Raquel Lázaro Receives Third Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Award

The first-year setter was instrumental in the Trojans’ wins over No. 17 UCLA and at Colorado this week
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball setter Raquel Lázaro (Córdoba, Spain/IES Castilla HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Sept. 17-23, the Conference announced on Monday, Sept. 24. Lázaro earns the third freshman award in her five-week career after opening the season with back-to-back awards. Oregon middle blocker Ronika Stone was chosen Offensive Player of the Week and the Ducks' outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide was named for the defensive award.
Lázaro continued to impress as she helped the then 14th-ranked Women of Troy earn a 3-0 sweep of No. 17 crosstown rival UCLA and a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Colorado on the road. She scored her fifth- and sixth-career double-doubles in the wins and set new career highs for aces (6 vs. UCLA) and assists (58 at Colorado). Her six aces were the most by a Trojan since 2015 when All-American Samantha Bricio had several matches with as many.
Against the Bruins, Lázaro scored 8.5 points with those six aces, a kill, and three blocks. She registered her double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs. Four days later, she put up 58 assists with 16 digs and added four blocks in the win over the Buffaloes. Among Pac-12 players, Lázaro currently ranks fourth in assists per set (11.14 aps) and is second for total assists (557). She is also tied for fourth with 17 service aces (seventh in aces per set at 0.34 saps).
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the eighth year (since 2011) that the Conference has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC players have received 19 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 17 freshman honors. In total, USC counts 75 Player of the Week certificates and ranks third in the Pac-12.
The 13th-ranked Women of Troy (10-3, 2-0 Pac-12) are on a season-long five-match winning streak and head to the Bay Area this weekend to face No. 2-ranked Stanford (10-1, 2-0) at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif., on Friday, Sept. 28. The Trojans and the Cardinal will meet at 8 p.m. PT in a live broadcast on ESPN2. On Sunday (Sept. 30), USC heads to Berkeley, Calif., to take on California (8-5, 0-2) in a 1 p.m. match at Haas Pavilion.
