Trojans Bring Home Singles and Doubles Championships from Battle in the Bay

The Women of Troy opened up the 2018 fall tournament season on a strong note as they brought home both a singles and a doubles championship from the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco this weekend. Freshman Danielle Willson won the singles championship while newcomer/sophomore Ana Neffa and partner junior Constance Branstine won the doubles championship.
"I'm excited and encouraged by how well we kicked off our opening weekend of tournament play," said head coach Alison Swain. "In particular, it was a phenomenal debut for three of our new players.
"Dani, Ana and Constance took advantage of the opportunity to get several college matches under their belts this weekend. It was great to see our doubles start to come along. In addition, I'm encouraged by the depth in our singles this year. That depth showed in a hard fought final match between Dani and Ana."
Freshman Salma Ewing, the ITA No. 5 newcomer/freshman in the nation, competed at the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. with some of the best singles players from across the country. Ewing reached the quarterfinals of the tournament, but lost to Michigan's Kate Fahey in an extremely tight match 6-7(1), 6-2, 7-6(3).
"Salma competed toe to toe with some of the county's top singles players and showed an incredible amount of composure and heart on big points," said Swain.
Next weekend, the Trojans will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif. where they will compete at the ITA All-American Championships. The tournament runs from Saturday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 6.
