September 22, 2018 | Women's Soccer, Features
LOS ANGELES – The No. 3 USC women's soccer team opened Pac-12 play with a 3-0 win over Washington at home on Saturday, thanks to a first-half goal and then two quick strikes in the second half.
The Trojans stay unbeaten with an 8-0-1 record, notching their seventh shutout in the process. Washington falls to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
USC got a first-half strike from Leah Pruitt to take a 1-0 lead into the half and then put the game away with two quick strikes in the second half. USC outshot the Huskies 23-6 in the game, but was fortunate to take a lead into the half, needing a spectacular save from Kaylie Collins in the 31st minute to keep Washington out of the net. It was the only save Collins would have to make on the day.
Hocking scored USC's second goal in the 66th minute, getting a brilliant feed from Pruitt, and then Hocking paid it forward with a pass back in the box to set up Daria Petredes' first career goal less than a minute later. Both Pruitt and Hocking had a goal and assist in the game.
GOALS
24' – USC: Leah Pruitt (assisted by Alea Hyatt) – Hyatt led Pruitt with a pass up the right side and Pruitt took one touch and then fired off a shot past the diving Husky keeper inside the left post.
66' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Leah Pruitt, Savannah DeMelo) – DeMelo slid a pass towards the endline down the right side for Pruitt, and Pruitt fired a pass back across the face of the goal where Hocking finished with one touch in front of the net.
67' – USC: Daria Petredes (assisted by Penelope Hocking, Tara McKeown) – Hocking ran down a pass from McKeown near the endline on the right side and sent a similar pass back across the goal as the one she finished just 39 seconds earlier. Petredes streaked into the box and finished with the right foot.
