Brandon Holt Claims Claremont Cup Pro Classic Crown
September 17, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojan junior topped recent UCLA grad Martin Redlicki in a three-set comeback to win the singles title.
USC junior Brandon Holt became the third Trojan to win a singles title at the Claremont Club Pro Classic in an impressive run that included a quarterfinal clash with fellow Trojan Daniel Cukierman. The last Trojan to win the Claremont title was Steve Johnson, who was victorious in 2011 just a year after Gary Sacks won the 2010 title.
Holt's run to the Claremont final included a decisive 6-1, 6-3 Round of 16 upset of the draw's No. 5 seed, Dominik Kellovsky of the Czech Republic. Cukierman, too, issued an upset in topping No. 4 seeded Paul Oosterbaan 6-3, 6-0 in the Round of 16 to bring up an all-Trojan quarterfinal clash. In Friday's quarters, Holt would fight back against his sophomore teammate to post a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Cukierman and take a spot in the semis. There, Holt dispatched Sam Shropshire 6-2, 6-1, bringing the Trojan into a rematch against a familiar foe from UCLA.
A 2018 UCLA grad, Martin Redlicki had won the past three meetings against Holt during collegiate action. The last was an all-out battle in the clinching match at the NCAA Team Quarterfinals. Sunday's Claremont final was another three-set affair, but this time Holt found the winning gear to stage a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win over Redlicki and claim the singles title.
