Sophomore is tied for fifth at 2-under.
Sophomore Kaito Onishi fired a 2-under 68 while freshman Charlie Reiter made his collegiate debut with a 2-over 72 as the No. 20 USC men's golf team finished eighth in the first round of the season-opening Fighting Illini Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14) at the Olympia Fields C.C.

The Trojans completed their first regular-season action of the 2018-19 campaign at 7-over 287 in eighth, 14 back of a two-way tie for first. USC will tee off in the second round at 6 a.m. PT.

Reiter got off to a fantastic start to his Trojan career with three straight birdies and a birdie chance on 4 before settling for a par. He went on to get to -4 through 11 but finished the final seven holes at +6 to tie for 28th after 18 holes.

It was Onishi who finished as USC's low scorer for the day, posting a 2-under front 9 and using birdies on 15 and 18 to reach par on the back. The sophomore and 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year is tied for fifth, three off the lead.

Senior Justin Suh, the 2018 Pac-12 Player of the Year, got off to a slow start with double bogeys on 2 and 3, turning at 3-over. A bogey on 12 moved him to 4-over but he finished the final six holes at -1 under and is tied for 31st at 3-over 73.

Junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 49th at 4-over 74 with three birdies on the day while junior Cheng Jin is tied for 66th at 8-over 78.
