Onishi, Suppa, Reiter also under par in first round.
Senior Justin Suh fired a 5-under 67 while sophomore Kaito Onishi and junior Kyle Suppa carded 2-under 70s to lead the USC men's golf team to fourth after the first round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga., on Friday (Oct. 19).
Host Georgia Tech took the first round lead at 18-under 270 while Clemson and Wake Forest are tied for second at 12-under 276 with the Trojans coming in at 10-under 278. The next four teams are tied at 2-under 286.
Suh, who just took over the No. 1 spot in the World Amateur Golf Rankings this week, celebrated the move with his fourth round under 70 this season in seven outings thanks to a 4-under back 9 that saw him birdie three of his final four holes.
The five-time winner last year with two top 10s this year – and just one round over par so far -- is two back of the lead.
Onishi, the 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year who posted a third-place finish in his only event this fall, turned in five birdies today en route to his 70 while Suppa had three. Suppa had a clean card until a late bogey on 18.
Freshman Charlie Reiter was also under par today – his third round under par this year -- at 1-under 71, good for a tie for 25th, while junior Cheng Jin is tied for 43rd at 2-over 74.
Action at the Golf Club of Georgia continues Saturday and Sunday. USC will tee off with Alabama and Florida State beginning at 6:25 a.m. PT in the second round.
