LOS ANGELES – With the USC baseball team back on campus after playing in summer leagues across the country, we took a look at how the Trojans fared over the last few months.
Four USC players earned All-Star or All-League honors in Blake Sabol, John Thomas, Chris Clarke and Brady Shockey. Sabol especially stood out as one of the top prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League and even made an appearance in the league's home run derby.
Chatham Anglers (Cape Cod League)
Kyle Hurt- Named the 18th best pitching prospect in the Cape Cod League ... Held a 1-1 record and a 3.38 ERA through 10 appearances for the Anglers in 2018 … Notched a save in a playoff game against the Brewster Whitecaps on 8/10 ...Finished the year with 27 strikeouts in 26.2 innings.
Ben Ramirez- Posted a slash line of .228/.544/.239 across 37 games … Tallied 14 RBI and six stolen bases to go along with his 22 hits … Went one for three with an RBI and a walk in the team's final playoff game against Wareham on 8/13.
Blake Sabol- Was selected to the East Division team for the Cape Cod League All-Star Game and also represented his team in the Cumberland Farms Home Run Hitting Contest … Named to the Perfect Game Collegiate Summer All-American second team ... Ranked the 22nd position player prospect in the Cape Cod League ... Was named Cape Cod League Week 5 Player of the Week on 7/17 … Led the Anglers with a .340 batting average which was the fourth highest in the Cape Cod League … Also led the team in home runs with seven, good for second most in the league … Hit .321 in the playoffs with two home runs across 28 at bats.
Wareham Gatemen (Cape Cod League)
Connor Lunn- Appeared in five games this summer, earning a 3-1 record and a 2.28 ERA … Struck out 13 batters across 19.2 innings including eight Ks in a 5.0 inning performance against Hyannis on 6/20 … Held opponents to a batting average of just .174.
Arroyo Seco Saints (California Collegiate League)
John Thomas- Was selected to the California Collegiate League Prospect Game on July 18th … Was named the 10th best prospect in the league according to D1Baseball … Led the Saints starters and placed fifth in the league in batting average with a line of .341/.439/.514 … Posted 10 RBI and seven doubles in 91 at-bats … Hit .379 in 29 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Conejo Oaks (California Collegiate League)
Bart West- Posted a line of .273/.380/.352 in 88 at bats for the Conejo Oaks … Led the team in walks with 16 … Finished the year with one home run, 14 runs scored and 15 RBI … Led the team and placed second in the California Collegiate League in sacrifice flies with three.
Green Bay Bullfrogs (Northwoods League)
Matthew Acosta- Led the Bullfrogs in slugging percentage (.588) and OPS (.980) in addition to holding the second highest batting average on the team (.338) … Drove in 18 runs and scored 14 himself in only 68 at bats … Had multi-hit performances in six of his 16 appearances, including two four-hit games … Had he reached the qualifying number of at-bats, Acosta would have ranked fourth in the Northwoods League in batting average.
Valley Blue Sox (New England Collegiate League)
Riley Lamb- Made 12 appearances out of the bullpen for the Blue Sox, compiling a 4.34 ERA over 18.2 innings … Held opposing hitters to a batting average of .217 … Finished the year with a K/9 average of 9.17 … Pitched one inning in relief in the Championship-winning game against the Ocean State Waves on 8/9.
Bethesda Big Train (Cal Ripken Collegiate League)
Chris Clarke- Was selected to represent the South Division in the Ripken League All-Star Game, in which he started on the mound and threw one scoreless inning ... Named to the All-Ripken League first team … Started in six of his seven appearances this summer, holding a team-best 4-0 record and a 2.73 ERA during the regular season … Was the starter for game one of the Ripken League Championship series, going five innings, allowing six hits and striking out two batters … Finished the year with 27 strikeouts in 31.1 innings, including eight in a 7.0 inning performance on 6/29.
Palm Springs Power (Southern California Collegiate League)
Brady Shockey- Boasted a team-high average of .384, recording 33 hits in 86 at-bats … Finished the summer with a line of .384/.419/.535 … Drove in 21 runs, had 22 runs scored and added five stolen bases in just 25 games … Received a spot on the 2018 All-SCCBL first team as one of three outfielders selected.
Portland Pickles (West Coast League)
John Beller- Made five appearances for Portland and compiled the team's best ERA (0.48) in 18.2 innings pitched … Held opposing batters to a batting average of just .127 and recorded a WHIP of 0.80, good for second best on the team … Led the team in first-pitch strike percentage (.648) … Recorded a save with three hitless innings in relief against the Wenatchee Applesox on 6/11.
Daniel Edson- Posted a slash line of .193/.310/.229 with six RBI and 14 runs scored in 30 appearances … Hit three doubles as part of 16 total hits in 30 at-bats … Hit .750 in four non-league games this year, with a home run, a double and three RBI.
Augie Sylk- Posted an ERA of 4.75 in 14 appearances this summer for a total of 30.1 innings pitched … Finished the year with a 4-1 record and 44 strikeouts, while holding opposing batters to a .250 average … Was awarded the win after three scoreless innings with four strikeouts against Gresham on 8/2.
Walla Walla Sweets (West Coast League)
Tyler Pritchard- Recorded a line of .196/.229/.225 through 36 games … Scored 20 runs and drove in another 12 in 102 at-bats … Played 233 innings at second base and led the middle infield with a fielding percentage of .972 … Also appeared in one game as a pitcher on 8/6, throwing 1.0 inning and allowing one run.
