Four Trojans Land All-Pac-12 Tennis Acclaim
June 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Brandon Holt and Jack Jaede are repeat honorees, while Daniel Cukierman and Laurens Verboven are first-time picks.
Following a 2017-18 season that saw the USC men's tennis team reach the Pac-12 title match and go on to an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance, four Trojans have picked up spots on All-Pac-12 teams for their efforts in USC's recent campaign. Leading the pack with his second straight All-Pac-12 First Team selection is sophomore Brandon Holt. In his first season as a Trojan, freshman Daniel Cukierman has secured All-Pac-12 Second Team honors, while juniors Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven have locked up All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. It's Jaede's second season with honorable mention from the conference and the first Pac-12 honor for Verboven.
Now a back-to-back All-Pac-12 first-teamer, sophomore Brandon Holt is coming off an All-American season in which he finished up ranked No. 12 in the nation in singles and No. 9 in the land in doubles, reaching the NCAA Round of 16 in both draws. Holt was USC's winningest singles player with a 25-12 overall record, going 4-2 in Pac-12 dual matches during the regular season at the No. 1 spot. He clinched five matches for the Trojans, including conference victories over Washington, Arizona and Utah. In doubles, Holt paired exclusively with fellow sophomore Riley Smith, going 17-5 overall with a perfect 7-0 mark in Pac-12 dual matches — all at the No. 1 slot in the doubles ladder.
Newcomer Daniel Cukierman was a quick fit into the Trojan lineup once he joined in the spring. The freshman sensation posted a 16-5 singles mark playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots and finished the year on a six-match win streak as he went undefeated in singles at the Pac-12 and NCAA team tournaments — 6-0 with one suspension in seven postseason matches at the No. 2 position. Cukierman led the team with seven match-clinching victories. In doubles, Cukierman paired with Tanner Smith for a 15-4 overall record that included a 12-4 mark in dual matches, going 9-4 at the No. 3 spot. Cukierman would finish his first season as a Trojan ranked No. 62 in the nation in singles — a season-high for the freshman.
Now a two-time All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention recipient, Jack Jaede was half of USC's winningest doubles team, sharing a 30-8 overall record and a 20-6 dual-match mark with fellow iTA All-American and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention recipient Laurens Verboven. The pair was a perfect 7-0 during Pac-12 regular-season dual matches. A junior, Verboven also doubles his previous career singles win total in collecting a 22-13 overall record this season, going 14-7 in dual matches with a 4-2 mark in Pac-12 dual matches. En route to finishing with the second most singles wins on the team, Verboven finished out 2018 with a seven-match singles win streak, collecting four wins in the postseason, including three during USC's NCAA Tournament action. Jaede and Verboven also combined forces to win the Sherwood Cup and Pacific Coast Doubles titles along the way to their debut in the NCAA Doubles draw as a 5-8 seed. The pair finished the season ranked No. 10 in the nation in the ITA Doubles rankings.
