Former USC Assistant Coach Ed Bartsch Dies At 75

Ed Bartsch, who was an assistant coach at USC under the legendary Peter Daland before continuing a highly successful coaching career, most recently as the coach at Saint Andrew's Aquatics, died last week at 75.
Bartsch was the USC men's swimming team's Associate Head Coach from 1989 to 1992, coaching under Daland in his final four seasons at Troy. He helped the Trojans to a pair of NCAA second-place finishes, earn 22 individual All-American honors during his four years, including five NCAA titles from Dave Wharton, as well as eight Pac-12 titles. He also helmed the highly successful Team Trojan club team, which sent six members to the 1992 Olympics.
A graduate of Michigan, Bartsch was a 1963 NCAA champion for the Wolverines in the 200y back and won a Pan Am Gold in the 200m back in 1964. He captained Michigan's team as a 1965 senior.
Bartsch earned an MBA at SMU in 1968 and was an assistant professor in the School of Business at Florida State from 1971-78 while also beginning a career as a club and age-group coach.
Following his time at USC, he spent six years as the Villanova men's and women's head coach (1994-99), leading the Wildcats to two Big East titles and 11 All-American honors.
Bartsch coached at Penn State as an assistant coach from 2001-08, focusing on the Nittany Lion distance swimmers, before heading Saint Andrew's Aquatics in Boca Raton, Fla.
