May 20, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team got seven scoreless innings from Solomon Bates and two homers from Blake Sabol to hand No. 2 Oregon State its first shutout in two years with an 8-0 win on Sunday at Dedeaux Field.
USC broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning and would score all eight runs over the next four innings. The Trojans move to 25-25 overall and 12-18 in Pac-12 play with the victory, while the Beavers fall to 42-9-1 overall and 18-8-1 in conference action. It was the final Pac-12 game of the season for USC.
Bates was again dominant, going at least seven innings for the third straight start. He struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits and four walks, stranding all eight batters who reached against him.
Sabol finished with five RBI on the day, driving in the first run of the game with a single in the fifth and then breaking the game open with two-run homers in both the sixth and eighth innings. Lars Nootbaar also plated two runs in the fifth to help the Trojans take a 3-0 lead and never look back.
Connor Lunn came in and tossed the final two innings for the Trojans, stranding a runner in both frames to seal the win. He struck out one.
Oregon State had not been shut out since April 30, 2016 in a 6-0 loss to Stanford.
