Trojans Go Cold in the Desert, Fall 5-1 at ASU
April 06, 2018 | Baseball, Features
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The USC baseball team had a tough day at the plate against Arizona State starter Alec Marsh on Friday night, falling 5-1 in the series opener.
Marsh tossed 8.1 strong innings to shut down the USC bats and drop the Trojans to 14-12 overall and 3-7 in Pac-12 play. ASU moves to 14-16 overall and 5-5 in conference action.
USC loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning, but a strikeout and then double play ended the threat. Marsh settled in after that, giving up just one hit, one run and two walks, while striking out seven the rest of the way. USC would mount a late comeback, loading the bases with one out to chase Marsh, but couldn't score more than the one run on a bases-loaded walk.
USC garnered five free passes in the ninth, with Jamal O'Guinn recording the final one with the bases full, but two flyouts ended the game.
The Sun Devils manufactured a run after a leadoff double in the bottom of the second and then got a solo home run from Gage Canning in the third. Two more runs, one courtesy of an error, in the fifth inning sealed it for ASU.
Dillon Paulson led off the second with a single and then Stephen Dubb doubled to give the Trojans two on with no outs. Matthew Acosta was then hit by a pitch before the strikeout and double play ended the frame and stranded all three runners. Blake Sabol would double in the fifth inning for USC.
