Hayley McKelvey Claims Her First MPSF Player of the Week Award
April 24, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
The senior was huge for the Trojans in their powerful MPSF win over UCLA.
A reliable defensive force for USC, senior utility Hayley McKelvey stepped up and led the charge on offense with a career-high five goals scored in USC's 11-5 win over No. 4 UCLA. For her efforts in the Trojans' dominating victory over their crosstown rivals, McKelvey has landed her first career selection as MPSF Player of the Week. She is the fourth Trojan to earn the honor this season as USC heads into the MPSF Tournament as the top seeds this weekend.
Along with her five-goal outburst to beat the Bruins, McKelvey also nabbed four steals and had one assist in the Trojans' Senior Day victory, which carried USC to its 11th straight win for a perfect 5-0 mark in MPSF play. The win over the Bruins was USC's 11th straight win and the largest margin of victory over UCLA since 2010.Â
With her career scoring day, McKelvey moved up USC's career scoring charts to rank No. 26 all-time with 106 career goals. McKelvey also added to her scoring streak, now with goals in the past seven games.
McKelvey and the Trojans are off to Berkeley this week to do battle for an automatic NCAA bid at the MPSF Tournament. USC is the top seed and has a bye for the first round, jumping straight to Saturday's semifinal to fight for a spot in Sunday's title match. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, the Trojans are also due to host the 2018 NCAA Tournament, which will run May 11-13 at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
