MPSF Frontrunners Sweep Weekly Awards
April 17, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Amanda Longan is MPSF Player of the Week and Paige Hauschild picks up a record seventh MPSF Newcomer of the Week award.
Fresh off of securing the top seed for the coming MPSF Tournament, the Trojans have also laid claim to another sweep of the MPSF's weekly awards. Junior goalie Amanda Longan has hauled in her second MPSF Player of the Week pick of the year, while freshman Paige Hauschild collects her seventh MPSF Newcomer of the Week honor, matching the record for single-season selections for that conference award. Both Trojans were instrumental in USC's 8-5 road win over top-ranked Stanford before USC locked up the MPSF top seed with a 12-1 victory over No. 21 San José State last weekend. The winning road trip stretched USC's win streak to 10 games and improved the Trojans to 20-1 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play.Â
Amanda Longan hauled in 16 saves to help anchor USC's victory over the Cardinal, helping hold Stanford to a season-low scoring output. The junior had five saves in the first period of play as USC worked ahead 4-1. In the second half she would make eight more saves as USC climbed ahead 8-4 before the Cardinal managed an open-goal score to end the game as an 8-5 USC victory. It was Longan's seventh double-digit save outing this season and lifts the junior to stand 12 saves away from the No. 3 all-time career saves mark at USC. This is Longan's second MPSF Player of the Week award in her USC career. She currently leads the conference this season with her 11.37 saves per game.
Paige Hauschild was 6-for-6 on opening sprints and delivered five goals in the two MPSF road wins for USC. In the crucial clash against top-ranked Stanford, Hauschild was 4-for-4 on sprints and scored three goals, tallying the first of the game and then adding back-to-back goals to open the fourth to get USC a four-goal lead over the Cardinal. The next day against San José State, Hauschild scored twice in a 12-1 USC victory. Now with 55 goals scored this season, Hauschild has tallied the fifth most single-season goals ever by a USC true freshman. Her seven MPSF Newcomer of the Week awards matches the single-season record set last season. Hauschild currently leads the conference in scoring with her 2.62 goals per game.
Longan, Hauschild and the rest of the Trojans are back home this weekend to wrap up the regular season with a crosstown rivalry clash against No. 4 UCLA. USC hosts the Bruins in a televised matchup at 7 p.m. on Saturday (April 21) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
