No. 3 USC Rolls Away From No. 5 Hawai’i In 12-7 Home Win
March 08, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Paige Hauschild served up a game-high four goals to help spur the Trojans to a key win.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team shut out visiting No. 5 Hawai'i in the second period to take command of a key nonconference clash tonight at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. While freshman Paige Hauschild piled up a four-goal performance, the Trojans pressed on to claim a 12-7 win over the Rainbow Wahine, improving USC's overall mark to 12-1 while Hawai'i goes to 12-3.
It was a tight start as the Rainbow Wahine had an answer for USC's opening goals from Brianna Daboub and Verica Bakoc to keep it at 2-2 after eight minutes of action. The Trojan defense would clamp down in the next stretch, silencing Hawai'i with a power play save from goalie Amanda Longan to start the frame and then continuing to interrupt their visitors with steals while Denise Mammolito and Paige Hauschild each plugged in Trojan goals at the other end.
Up 4-2 at halftime, USC saw Hawai'i close the gap to one with a 5-meter penalty shot. The Trojans were unfazed, however, and Hauschild found Annika Jensen for a nearside strike that built back USC's advantage to 5-3. Another clutch save from Longan was followed by a Jensen assist to Mammolito for blast that made it 6-3. Hawai'i would get one back, but Daboub got USC up on a 6-on-5 soon after, and Hayley McKelvey rifled in the score to get USC ahead 7-4 in the final moments of the third. USC stayed the course in the fourth as Hauschild scored three more goals to go along with a skipper from Kelsey McIntosh and a buzzer-beater from Elise Stein to close out a final 12-7 win for the Trojans.
USC has another matchup with the Rainbow Wahine ahead, as the Trojans head to a training trip in Honolulu over Spring Break. USC will finish out its week in Hawai'i with a clash against the host Rainbow Wahine at 6 p.m. HT on March 17.
