Trojans Shut Down Cal State Fullerton, 3-1
March 27, 2018 | Baseball, Features
FULLERTON, Calif. – The USC arms shut down Cal State Fullerton on the road for a 3-1 win on Tuesday night.
Four Trojans combined to hold the Titans to just five hits and one run in a non-conference road win for USC. The Trojans move to 12-9 with the win, while Cal State Fullerton falls to 9-13 with the loss.
Austin Manning got the start and picked up the victory, tossing 5.0 innings and giving up the lone run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Solomon Bates would throw 2.0 scoreless frames, Brian Gursky added a scoreless eighth and Connor Lunn picked up the save. The Trojans issued no walks in the game, while giving up six hits and striking out eight batters.
USC scored all three of its runs in the first inning, getting a two-run double from Dillon Paulson and an RBI single from Stephen Dubb. The Trojans had five hits in the opening frame.

QUOTABLE
"The story of the game was the pitching," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "Austin gave us a great outing for his first start, and then Solomon, Gursky and Lunn did what they have been doing all year and shut the door. We made some nice plays in the field, specifically Chase over at short, and then we were also able to jump them early. It was big for us to get that lead early and then make it hold up."
"The offense going out and putting up a three-spot in the first was big," said Manning. "It being my first start of the year, there were obviously a few nerves, but them doing that helped me just focus on going out there and doing my job."
COMING UP
The Trojans host Washington for a three-game Pac-12 series starting on Thursday. Thursday and Friday's game will be at 6 p.m. and Saturday will be at 2 p.m.
