This weekend, USC hosted the Power 5 Trailblazers Challenge, celebrating the five female coaches who spearhead both the men's and women's track & field programs at Power 5 schools.
It was a special event not only for those five coaches and the participating student-athletes, but for a group of unique guests as well.
In the middle of the meet, all eyes shifted to the 100-meter dash featuring six young women with different forms of intellectual disabilities.
Desiree Rodgers, Kathy Rodgers, Kristina Hale, Kyla Schilz, Katherine Alsop and D'nee Forte each gave their all in front of 1,500 fans at Loker Track & Field Stadium.
These local Special Olympics runners train in Long Beach with coach Jen Totman, and Schilz is also training for the Paralympics, as she is battling cerebral palsy.
Said Schilz: "I really enjoyed running the 100 here today. This was a great opportunity for us and to meet new friends."
Hale added, "I had fun. I got to run," while Rodgers remarked, "I like meeting new friends."
