USC Women's Rowing Advances All Three Boats to Grand Finals in San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO—The USC women's rowing team had a strong day of racing on the first day of competition (March 24) at the 45th annual San Diego Crew Classic on the waters of Mission Bay. Because of their stellar performances, the Trojans will have the opportunity to race in three grand finals tomorrow (March 25).
"The heats were a great opportunity for us to execute what we have been working on in practice since our last race," said head coach Josh Adam. "The team is very excited to see what more we have in the finals tomorrow."

Kicking off the morning, the Trojans punched their ticket to the grand final for the Women's Collegiate V8+ Jessop-Whittier Cup. Historically, the Women of Troy have been extremely successful in this race as USC won five-straight titles between the years of 2011-2015. Coxed by Ana Moloney, USC placed second in their heat with a time of 6:44.208. This time was 11 seconds ahead of third place UCLA (6:55.531). USC will compete in the grand final tomorrow. Junior Athina Angelopoulou stroked for USC and was seated with Ida Gørtz Jacobsen, Chloe Brew, Astrid Steensberg, Nikoline Laidlaw, Marliis Reinkort, Sofia Sobotta and Radka Novotnikova in the bow.

Up next was the 2V8+ Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness event where USC's second varsity eight placed first in their heat with a time of 6:48.005 which advanced them to the grand final. Finn O'Neil coxed the boat with Brooke Downes in the stroke. Downes was followed by Sawyer Chenen, Dori Bene, Sasa Varekova, Katie Hubert, Isabel Fitter, Krete Koovit and Kasia Pilch in the bow.

The final race of the day was the V4+ Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. In 2017, the Trojans placed first in the grand final of this event to bring home the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. Guided by coxswain Liv Reiter, USC came in second place in their heat with a time of 7:38.724 which advanced them to the grand final. Lena Schröder powered the stroke, followed by Molly Eberth, Kate Melberg and Cami Hays in the bow.

The Trojans have a full day of racing tomorrow (March 25). They will begin the day with the V4+ Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup Grand Final at 8:24 a.m. where the Trojans will attempt to win this trophy for the second year in a row. Up next will be the 2V8+ Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Grand Final at 9:44 a.m., followed by the Women's Collegiate V8+ Jessop-Whittier Cup Grand Final at 10:32 a.m. The Trojans will then race in the Collegiate V4+ B Final Only event at 11:48 a.m. to conclude the weekend.
