The Trojans were unable to get anything going against the third-ranked team in the country all weekend, falling to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in Pac-12 play. Stanford moves to 17-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action.
The Cardinal scored in each of the first five innings, breaking the game open with four runs in the fourth, courtesy in large part to a three-run homer by Brandon Wulff. Stanford then tacked on five runs in the fifth inning to put things out of reach.
USC got four runners on base through the first three innings, but couldn't manufacture a run early. Stephen Dubb walked and Lars Nootbaar doubled in the second to get runners on second and third for the Trojans, but a strikeout and groundout ended that threat. Kaleb Murphy and Brandon Perez singled in the third inning.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Lars Nootbaar had the lone extra-base hit for the Trojans.
- Isaac Esqueda tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief for USC, striking out one and giving up two hits.
- Daniel Edson got a pinch-hit single in his lone at-bat.
COMING UP
The Trojans head to Cal State Fullerton for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday and then host Washington for a three-game Pac-12 series starting on Thursday.
