USC Falls in Series Opener at No. 3 Stanford
March 23, 2018 | Baseball, Features
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The USC baseball team couldn't find its groove at the plate against No. 3 Stanford on Friday night, falling 5-1 in a Pac-12 matchup.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 4-0 lead before USC got on the board in the sixth inning, but that was it for the Trojans as they fall to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 play. Stanford moves to 15-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
Matthew Acosta singled home Kaleb Murphy in the sixth after Murphy led the inning off with a double. The Trojans previously left two runners on base in the third inning after a Chase Bushor leadoff double. USC threatened in the ninth, getting a single from Blake Sabol, double from Stephen Dubb and then walk from Bushor to load the bases, but a double play would end the game.
Stanford got RBI from Jesse Kuet and Beau Branton to take a 2-0 lead in the second. They would tack runs on in the third, fifth and seventh. Stanford ace Tristan Beck gave the Cardinal 7.0 innings, giving up five hits and one run for the win. Jack little tossed the final 2.0 innings for the home team.
