Trojans Take Series With 5-2 Win Over Utah
March 17, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – Quentin Longrie tossed 7.0 shutout innings and Matthew Acosta homered late to power the USC baseball team to a 5-2 victory and Pac-12 opening series win over Utah on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans move to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in Pac-12 play with the win, while Utah falls to 2-16, 1-2 Pac-12.
Longrie scattered five hits and had to work out of a few jams early, but settled in to move to 3-0 on the season. The junior lefty struck out four and walked two on the day. Stephen Dubb provided the early offense, doubling in two runs in the second inning. USC tacked on three runs in the seventh, getting a sacrifice fly from Brady Shockey and then a two-run blast to right by Acosta.
The Utes would score two runs in the ninth, one of which was unearned, but Connor Lunn finished things off to preserve the win. Brian Gursky tossed a scoreless eighth for the Trojans, using 10 pitches to retire the side in order.

QUOTABLE
"I thought the guys responded well after getting shut out yesterday and came out ready to play," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "I was proud of them for that. Quentin came out and gave us a great start. We had a huge defensive play by Chase Bushor in the second inning with the bases loaded and two outs on a ball that was scorched at him. Then Quentin was cruising the rest of the way."
"It was great to see Stephen come in, get the start and hit a big two-run double to get the scoring going," said Hubbs. "Matthew has been scuffling a little bit, but he got the big swing to make it five for us. That was huge and good to see him get one. Their starter was tough, but I thought we had some good at-bats today."
COMING UP
The Trojans hit the road against UC Irvine on Tuesday and then play a three-game series at Stanford next weekend to continue Pac-12 play.
