USC’s senior goaltender receives her second Pac-12 weekly honor
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse senior goaltender Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School) was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 26. It is her second-such honor this season. Johns also received the league's first-ever defensive weekly honor on Feb. 13. Colorado senior attacker Darby Kiernan was chosen as the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
Johns produced 11 saves in USC's 11-8 win over 18th-ranked Notre Dame on the road. She also picked up six ground balls against the Irish. Both stats rank in the top 10 in the program's single-game records. Johns added four saves and four more ground balls in a tough loss at No. 15 Northwestern. During a 4-0 USC run, Johns helped keep the Wildcats scoreless for more than 27 consecutive minutes.
The Pac-12 is in its first season as a lacrosse conference. USC previously competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) and is the two-time defending league regular-season and tournament champion. Johns won MPSF Defensive Player of the Week three times and was once chosen as the league's Rookie of the Week.
The 12th-ranked Trojans (2-2) will play their first home game of the season on Wednesday, March 7, as hosts to No. 6 Boston College (5-0) at McAlister Field. The teams will draw at 3 p.m. PT and be shown live on USC's Pac-12+ streaming platform. The game is also a rematch of the 2017 NCAA quarterfinal game in which the Eagles eliminated the Women of Troy, 20-14, in Boston, to advance to the national semifinals.
