No. 3 USC Stopped By No. 1 Stanford In Barbara Kalbus Invitational Final
February 25, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
USC misses out on a third straight title at the tourney after a 9-3 loss to the Cardinal.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team saw its undefeated start to 2018 come to an end at the hands of No. 1 Stanford in today's championship game at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. After building up a 10-0 overall record after two big wins yesterday, the Trojans' firepower was on the fritz in the title match vs. the Cardinal. Stanford would emerge with a 9-3 win over USC to take the tournament title.
While USC misfired on a set of 6-on-5 chances in the first period, Stanford would strike first, then convert a 5-meter penalty shot in the final minute. USC responded with a screamer from Paige Hauschild off a pass from Brianna Daboub with 22 seconds left, but the Cardinal countered with a blast that made it 3-1 Stanford in the final seconds of the frame. USC closed the gap again when Denise Mammolito zipped in a 6-on-5 score off a pass from Hauschild to open the second, making it 3-2, only to see Stanford rattle off four straight goals next. Down 7-2 late in the second, USC got a blast from freshman Verica Bakoc to go with 12 seconds left in the half to make it a 7-3 margin at the break.
That would be the last USC goal of the game, though, as Stanford's defense turned away the Trojans throughout the second half. The Cardinal managed two more goals in the third period to go up 9-3, and then neither team would score in the fourth as Stanford held tight to its advantage to close out the game with the title to its name.
USC's next competition comes up in a couple weeks, with the Trojans' home opener set for March 7 vs. UC Irvine at 5 p.m. The next day, USC hosts Hawai'i for another 5 p.m. matchup at Uytengsu Aquatics Center on March 8.
