Concordia Men's Volleyball Posts First-Ever Win Over USC

Trojans next host No. 12 Grand Canyon on Saturday.
The Concordia men's volleyball team posted its first-ever victory over USC with a 26-24, 14-25, 26-24, 25-15, win in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Feb. 23) in USC's Galen Center.
Concordia, a first-year member of the MPSF, defeated the Trojans for the first time in 6 all-time meetings in the young series that began in 2014.
The Eagles upped their overall record to 7-6 in 2018 and are 3-3 in the MPSF. The Trojans lost their fourth consecutive match to fall to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the MPSF.
Jack Wyett led USC with 22 kills while hitting .452, Ryan Moss had 12 kills and 10 digs, Gianluca Grasso had 10 kills and 7 digs and Gert Lisha had 16 digs.
For Concordia, Jonathan Predney had 11 kills, while Darcy Taig and Raymond Barsemian each had 10 kills, Josiah Bergt had 8 kills and Chandler Gibb had 8 digs.
USC outhit the Eagles, .357 to .312. But Concordia had more blocks (9.0 to 4.0), aces (6 to 2) and aces (45 to 41).
USC led throughout most of the first set, holding a 22-20 edge before Concordia closed strong while hitting .394 to the Trojans' .464. USC steadily pulled away in the second set, opening up a 15-7 lead and extending it to 22-11 en route to the win while hitting .500. Concordia went on a 3-point run to build a 12-9 lead in the third set and was up 24-22 before the Trojans tied it at 24-24, only to see the Eagles score the final 2 points. Concordia jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and continued to build on the margin, moving to 11-4 and then 15-7 before cruising in to capture the set.
USC now hosts Grand Canyon, another new MPSF member, on Saturday (Feb. 24) at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
