February 15, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse, Features
The Women of Troy are 8-3 in all-time top-10 match-ups
LOS ANGELES – The No. 8 Trojans (1-0) will face No. 2 Stony Brook (0-0) on Friday, Feb. 16, in the Orange County Lacrosse Showcase at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. The game is organized by the Orange County chapter of U.S. Lacrosse and will be streamed live on YouTube.
USC will participate as half of a top-10 matchup for the 12th time. The Trojans are 8-3 in previous such games and own nine wins over top-10 opponents all-time. The Women of Troy kicked off the season with an 11-5 win over Virginia Tech and have now won 39 of their last 44 contests—a span that has included 20-game and 12-game winning streaks; the two longest in program history.
The Trojans and Seawolves have developed a bi-coastal rivalry over the last three seasons. Playing in sub-freezing temperatures, the teams met for the first time in 2015. Stony Brook overpowered USC and claimed a decisive 7-4 win. The following season, the Trojans claimed the largest margin of victory in the series with a four-point win, 14-10, at McAlister Field. In 2017, USC returned to Long Island with the No. 9 ranking, but fell, 9-7, to the seventh-ranked Seawolves.
USC returns a pair of senior defensive anchors in IWLCA All-American defender Lydia Sutton and All-Region goalie Gussie Johns. Last season's MPSF Rookie of the Year, sophomore midfielder Kerrigan Miller brings back her all-around game to lead the Trojans' attack.
After graduating over 200 goals from a season ago, USC will turn to sophomore midfielder Kaeli Huff, junior attacker Gabbi Klein, and a host of underclassmen and transfers to power the offense. Fifth-year head coach Lindsey Munday (70-30) leads the Women of Troy into their sixth year of competition.
