Gussie Johns Named First-Ever Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week

The senior goalie put up nine saves in an 11-5 win over Virginia Tech in USC’s season opener
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse senior goaltender Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School) was named the first-ever Pac-12 lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 12. Colorado junior midfielder Miranda Stinson was chosen as the league's Offensive Player of the Week.

Johns was staunch between the pipes in the Trojans' 11-5 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday (Feb. 10). The win was her third consecutive season-opening victory and was the first-ever road season opener for the Women of Troy. Johns recorded nine saves and picked up one ground ball and even secured a draw control to help seal the USC victory. She held the Hokie offense without a goal for the first 27 minutes and the final 19 minutes of the game.

The Pac-12 is in its first season as a lacrosse conference. USC previously competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) and is the two-time defending league regular-season and tournament champion. Johns won MPSF Defensive Player of the Week three times and was once chosen as the league's Rookie of the Week.

The Trojans will play in the Orange County Lacrosse Showcase this Friday (Feb. 16) at Lebard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. The eighth-ranked Trojans (1-0) take on No. 2-ranked Stony Brook (0-0) at 7 p.m. PT under the lights. The game will be shown on YouTube Live in a broadcast produced by MaxLaxOC. USC is 1-2 in three previous meetings with the Seawolves. All three have been competitive games with SBU winning, 7-4, at home in 2015; and 9-7 at home in 2017.
