Justin Suh Fifth On Fall Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings
December 20, 2018 | Men's Golf, Features
Senior posted four top 15 finishes in fall, including one win.
Justin Suh, with one victory and four top 15 finishes in four fall tournaments, was ranked fifth in the fall Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings for the U.S. squad while sophomore Kaito Onishi also came in fifth on the men's international list that was released today.
Â
The top six golfers from the final ranking in the Spring from both the United States and International men and women - 12 total golfers - will be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup, hosted by The Alotian Club in Roland, Arkansas, June 7-9.
Â
Suh, coming off an All-American junior season, is the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world. He got his seventh career win at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in October, winning at 14-under 202 (67-67-68). He opened the season with a tie for fourth at the Fighting Illini Invitational and has two our top 15 finishes.
Suh, who helped the U.S. win the Arnold Palmer Cup this summer and received the Arnold Palmer Cup exemption, also has seven rounds in the 60s this year and has 10 rounds of par or better in 12 outings. He leads the team with a stroke average of 69.25.
Â
Onishi played in three fall events and was also inside the top 15 in all of his finishes, including a third at the Fighting Illini Invitational at 3-under 207 (68-69-70) and a tie for ninth at the Saint Mary's Invitational at 3-under 210 (73-71-66). Onishi is second on the team with a stroke average of 70.00.
Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
Â
The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team will include the men's and women's winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections, and a coaches pick.
Â
The next Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking will be announced Feb. 13.
